On 6 December 2017, Foxtel announced that A Place to Call Home had been renewed for a sixth season. It was later announced, on 19 March 2018 that the 10-episode sixth season would be the series' last.

Amy Polson was originally played by Krew Boylan, however due to scheduling issues, the role is now played by Amy Mathews. Sara Wiseman and Matt Levett, who portray Carolyn Bligh and Andrew Swanson respectively, have both been promoted to the main cast. Jenni Baird and Deborah Kennedy, who portray Regina Standish and Doris Collins respectively, will both return for season two. Olivia must deal with losing Georgie to his birth mother.

The series' Script Executive, Bevan Lee stated "Season 6 truly completes my vision for the series. I promise to bring the show to its finale on a wave of tears, laughter and most importantly, closure." Production on the sixth season began on 19 March 2018. The 1950s come to an end at Ash Park, bringing with it love, forgiveness and acceptance for the Bligh family.
Jack gets more than he bargained for when he has an interview with a replacement surgeon. Sarah and George hope their good news will mark a change in the fate of Ash Park. Henry becomes severely rattled when a familiar face returns. The final scene is of Sarah's death at the age of 104, surrounded by David, Olivia, and Leah.
Sarah emerges from the shower, to a gunshot, and finds a shocked René, a gun-wielding Regina and an unconscious George lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. The women's clinic transforms into Jack's community clinic. Sarah returns to Inverness with her husband Rene to attend Anna and Gino's wedding but still has feelings for George. Olivia, feeling guilty about the baby deception, is visited by Andrew prompting feelings of jealousy from James.

To my mind, this is undoubtedly the greatest Australian drama of its time - possibly of all time. As the Blighs celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah, Jack slips further into depression, until a conversation with Frank inspires him to make a courageous decision. Elizabeth sets up her maternity hospital; the family urges Carolyn to reach out to Jack. Anna decides to stick to her principles by not hiding her pregnancy for the meeting with film producers about adapting her novel.

In June 2014, Glen Williams from TV Week reported that Channel Seven had passed on the option to renew the series and had recently told the cast and crew they would not be required for a third season. However, on 25 October 2014, it was announced the show was to be revived by Foxtel for at least two more seasons.
